Garden Grove History |
|
The origins of Garden Grove can be
traced back to the explorations of Gaspar de Portola in 1769. After
Spanish and Mexican ownership, California became a state in 1850.
Dr. Alonzo Cook, Garden Grove’s Founding Father, purchased 160 acres,
in what became Garden Grove, from Abel Stearns in 1874. Dr. Cook later
donated part of this land north of Main Street and Garden Grove
Boulevard for use as the site of the first schoolhouse and post office
(the post office and other original buildings may be seen at the
Stanley Ranch Museum). Dr. Cook also planted many of the trees that
adorn this most beautiful city. The population grew as more and more
people were attracted to the vast opportunities in Garden Grove.
Available land and low prices caused a sudden building boom, making
Garden Grove the fastest growing city in the United States during the
late 1950’s. On June 18,1956, Garden Grove was formally incorporated.
Today Garden Grove has a population close to 172,000 and ranks as
the fourth
largest city in Orange County
and the 17th largest in California. The community is a dynamic and
thriving city with a strong sense of its roots based on a colorful
history. Although the city has grown in size and population, the
beauty of the landscape has been preserved. Garden Grove boasts over
160 acres of parks and recreational areas and is an outstanding
community dedicated to family fun and recreation. It is located in the
heart of Orange County and is easily accessed by the #22 Garden Grove
Freeway and Interstates #5 and #405. Garden Grove is the hub for
tourism. The central location makes Garden Grove an ideal place for
vacationers and business with its access to Los Angeles, San Diego,
Long Beach and the Inland Empire.
